Finding the Unchangealbe

Finding the Unchangeable

By: Oscar Nelson

After having a deep experience in a Float tank a few years ago I really started to look for answers to what I saw and what it meant. Among others, Nisargadatta Maharaj was one of the key voices to explain and guide me back to that expansive space. I want to take one of his quotes and consider it, talk about it, dissect it and see what comes out. Please add any thoughts to the Comment area, I would love for you to join the conversation. Here is the quote;

“Of the unknowable only silence talks. The mind can talk only of what it knows. If you diligently investigate the knowable, it dissolves and only the unknowable remains. But with the first flicker of imagination and interest the unknowable is obscured and the known comes to the forefront. The known, the changeable, is what you live with – the unchangeable is of no use to you. It is only when you are satiated with the changeable and long for the unchangeable, that you are ready for the turning round and stepping into what can be described, when seen from the level of the mind, as emptiness and darkness.” (Nisargadatta Maharaj)

This starts off with, ‘Of the unknowable only Silence talks.’ This can seem like a paradoxical statement but there is a depth here that has been hinted at by other Masters. Thomas Keating is quoted saying ‘Gods Language is Silence, and all the translations are bad.’ Even the Bible encourages us to ‘Be Still, and Know that I am God.’ So in Deep Silence there can be found wisdom.

‘The mind can talk only of what it knows.’ The old, the know, can be digested by the mind and projected out to the future or related to the past. The New, the unique and freshly emerging, has no basis in history. It is a Unique Unfolding from Nothingness. The mind can only regurgitate what it has digested, it cannot create from Nothing. This means the mind is no help to us in finding the Unknowable (or ‘God’, etc ).

‘If you diligently investigate the knowable, it dissolves and only the unknowable remains.’  Question and Doubt everything you know. Your name was gifted to you by someone else and your body taught to respond to the sound. You are not your name. You are not your body. If you are not your name, or your body; Who Are You? What is left is a Vast Unknowable, a ‘Cloud of Unknowing’ as it were between ‘You’ and ‘God’. But this Unknowable or ‘Don’t Know Mind’ is a space that can bring massive wisdom and regeneration to this quest of the Unchanging.

‘But with the first flicker of imagination and interest the unknowable is obscured and the known comes to the forefront.’ The mind is only limitation, it cannot hold the ‘All’ of everything. We must step past the mind to move into the Unchanging and Eternal. Even a whisper of movement of the mind distorts. It takes allowing and relaxation for the chatter to subside again, but resting and relinquishing are key steps to keep that Peace the Unchanging give us.

‘The known, the changeable, is what you live with – the unchangeable is of no use to you.’ In our day to day life we are on the surface of things, doing what we feel we must to get through life. We read the words but forget the blank page underneath so-to-speak. The body we find ourselves in will die someday, only meant to grow and then decay. The changeable is what life seems to give, but we came from the Unchangeable and will return there eventually. If we can find the Unchangeable and rest there, we are able to transcend death.

‘It is only when you are satiated with the changeable and long for the unchangeable that you are ready for the turning round and stepping into what can be described, when seen from the level of the mind, as emptiness and darkness.’  There comes a time when it is possible to see everything as bullshit in a way. I remember it popping to mind that everything I was taught or told had been given to the person telling me these things, by someone else who was told it by someone else. It dawned on my there was little original thought in what the World was telling me. It was all regurgitation of something on a human level. To transcend where we are we have to change our perspective. When you see that what will fade and go away is Illusion; that the ONLY thing worth finding and keeping is the Perception of Unity that can be found only by resting in the Unchangeable. That turning point, where there is a rejection of what Society has fed us to make us happy, is a shedding of obligation, of expectations of others and ourselves. That sense and knowing of being utterly ‘Full’ with nothing needed, but rest in the Infinite, is seen as lazy and unproductive from the level of the mind. That space of clarity and completion with a satisfaction of a strong desire can give a momentary feeling of this ‘Fullness’ or ‘Completion’ in the gap between thoughts. When the mind subsides after being satisfied (and endless task) the satisfaction that comes is from the enjoyment of just Being Alive, of ‘Awareness’ just resting. And as Nisargadatta says, ‘when seen from the level of the mind, as emptiness and darkness.’ This emptiness and darkness is a Vast Alive Nothingness behind everything. When we take the radical position that we are after what is Eternal, our whole life changes course. We can find Home Within.

I often feel Spirituality is akin to those Magic Eye art pieces that were popular in the ’90’s. At the surface level it is a blob of chaotic color and visual ‘noise’ (the mind); but when deeply seen, in a way outside of our day to day perception, a picture emerges where only chaos once was. This picture came from within the chaos with nothing other than an intention and change in perspective. And that is what I propose is needed, and intention to befriend the Unchangeable and an openness to seeing life from a new perspective.

To shift your perspective, spend time in the Unchangeable. For me, that is most easily done by trying to stay in ‘Don’t Know Mind’ or the ‘Cloud of Unknowing’ as much as I can. Formal Meditation for 10 minutes, twice a day is excellent; but know this can be done anytime during the day or work by just dropping out of the known and resting in the Unknown for a moment.

Question Everything,

Live Naked

By: Oscar Nelson   11/27/2017

Live Naked.

WDark Treehen we are open and unguarded against life, we are free to be what we need to be in the moment. When we don’t hold ourselves back by boxing ourselves into a set, solid pattern; we are free to be who we need to be as we need to be it. This is living in Freedom, moving how Life directs us.

“As long as you have all sorts of ideas about yourself, you know yourself though the mist of these ideas; to know yourself as you are. give us all ideas. You cannot imagine the taste of pure water; you can only discover it by abandoning all flavorings.” Nisargadatta Maharaj

What yoFreedomu are is what is left when you give everything up. You are what remains Unchainging in the colorful and loud stream of sensations we call life. And that Unchanging aspect is what we are all inwardly seeking, even if we do not realize it. Having a relationship with that Unchanging aspect of ourselves is where inner freedom and peace take hold. When we can touch and rest in something Permanent there is a drastic relaxation of anxiety and worry.

So how do we give up the ideas we have about ourselves and find the Permanent in the changing?

Question Everything!

That is the Infiniteway to loosen the knots around you. Even your name is just a sound your body has been conditioned to respond to, it is not who you are. Everything that you know or have been taught has been an idea or concept passed down to you; to be accepted or denied by you. You have the power to let them go if they no longer serve you. And to be blunt, most do not serve you. I suggest you let go of all you possibly can and Live Naked in the moment. You still exist, and will move and function in the world (possibly more harmoniously) when you give up the concepts and ideas that bind you.

.They bind you to your mind.

The mind is a powerful tool, but when we cannot get space from it, the mind can drive us kindof crazy. The peace and freedom we all want is within and just below all the loud, yet empty, demands we feel are on us.

We are already free, but just like Maharaj said, ‘You cannot imagine the taste of pure water; you can only discover it by abandoning all flavorings.”

As best you can today, with me, abandon the Story about yourself and Live Naked.

Question Everything!

Do What You Want

By: Oscar Nelson

Let me tell you a secret. You are not in control of the outcomes in your life.No Control

‘Wait WHAT?’ …. Bullshit you say?

Somethings may have gone to plan, or close to plan. But think about it, has anything really gone the way you have expected exactly? We may have an idea or direction, but the exact outcome is always up to a big chance. Effort and hard work help tremendously, but are not always an indicator of guaranteed success.

I have tried really hard at something in the past and had it blow up in my face. I have also half-assed things that were amazing in others eyes.

The outcome was separate from the effort.expectations Shakespeare

So what does that mean for us? How do we live if what we are after is not a guarantee? I suggest you live in a way where moment by moment, you make the choice (again in the moment) that the ‘Best Version of Yourself’ would choose and then let go of any expectations. Let go of any expectation in the future or a tying up of the past. Act as you think you are best able in the moment, then let everything else go. Outside of you doing what you feel is right in the moment; everything is causeless. Good or Bad may come to you. Let it be. You may be unjustifiably rewarded, or punished. Let it be. Be like a screen door and let life flow through you. The push and pull you may feel on you are all imaginary, they are only there because you allow them. Allow those that may be happy or upset with you to just be as they are. Allow them to just be as they are, they have little choice. It helps to take nothing personally.

Have your goals written out (100 things you want to Be, Do and Have is a great start) . And let the expectation of those go too. When you can release expectations and rest in the moment you may be surprised at the ease of that which needs to come to you can flow. Its an open hand that can receive easier than a closed fist. When you are unattached to outcomes, you are free. When you are free, what you need comes to you as you need it in the moment.

What aVast Nowre you if you have no future and no past? What are you if you only exist right now, in this moment? It seems so small, the now, this exact second; but if you really feel into it, its a vast Ocean. Inside the moment you don’t have a name, no story or history. You ARE, with everything else that IS.

This is HOME.

‘But how will I get what I want if I don’t plan and push and try to get ahead?’ – Good question. I advocate planning, but all planning is done in the moment. Do what you feel you must do in the moment, in the ‘Now’ but let go of any future desire or expectation of getting anything from it. What you are getting at is ‘Action for Action’Path Not Takens Sake’. You are working to work, creating to create, writing to write, with no thought of the future or reward. When what you are doing in the moment is its own reward you are always rich, always free. And when you produce and create from that space there is no way the World won’t reward you.

Money and abundance flows to Value. And when you create, work, produce, even play, from a place of Stillness (which action with no expectations engenders) you can’t help but produce massive value. Your mental state of calm alone can be of value to those around you.

So to recap:

  • Set Your Goals and Dreams
  • Let go of any Expectations
  • Do what you think the ‘Best Version of Yourself’ would do in the moment, in any situation
  • Let what comes, come and let what goes go
  • Let life flow through you (like a Screen Door) and Rest in the ‘Now’

Let Go and Be Free.

Hit me up with any questions, and remember;

You Got This!

P.S. Please write below what expectation(s) you are releasing today.

It’s OK if ‘IT’ Sucks.

By: Oscar Nelson  11/10/2017

I suffer from a good bit of perfectionism. It has, in the past, held me back from starting a lot of things that could have been very beneficial. I am lucky in a way, to have a bit of arrogance as well… . The two, perfectionism and arrogance, fight each other. And what comes out is action that has an edge to it. A head down, shoulder the weight, and a ‘fuck what is logical’ attitude that generally pushes me forward when it would be natural for me to stagnate.

I thought about it recently, because I sometimes see people who have A TON to offer the world but are stuck and not moving forward. Then it dawned on me, one aspect that gets me going and out of the perfectionism, is an attitude. The attitude is:

‘ It’s OK if ‘IT’ Sucks ‘

‘IT’ being whatever the Challenge is.

Maybe your Challenge is a new hobby, a new business, writing a book, starting a blog, creating a romantic relationship… YoSucking at Somethingu get the idea. Anything can be a challenge, and anything is possible if you are OK giving up your expectations of a certain result. Let it be OK if it sucks. But I have a feeling it wont. Because you wont stop there.

Everything is hard before it is easy. And when shit is hard, we suck at it. But then it gets a little easier, and a little more natural and smooth; as we fight past the ‘Suck’. Maybe we wont be world class, but almost anyone, at anything, can move past the ‘Suck’ part if they try. I just takes perseverance and a resilience to the ‘Suck’.

To get to where you want to go, Sucking at it (at first and for the beginning) is the first step.

What can you suck at today that will be a step forward in the direction you need to go?

What can you make a mess of, and have a blast with, that moves you in the direction of your Dreams?Start The Dream

Do that which excites and scares you. And remember;

Its OK if it Sucks.

You got this!

P.S. Please write below what you are going to be ‘OK if it Sucks’ at? And know I am rooting for you!

Fear is the Way – and why Giving Rocks!!!

Today is Halloween, a day to poke fun at Fear. A day to display the ‘Masks’ that make us afraid and realize it is nothing more than that, a mask. This is a day that allows something to shake free if we can see the meaning behind embodying our fears and realizing that  they are not who we are.Masks

I just got back from a big Convention in Dallas Texas. It was all about learning how to get a message out to a global audience and helping as many people as you can with your influence and message. It really pushed me to think about … well, what I am about. I really had to look hard at myself and see what was in me that is wanting to be given. And there is a depth of power in that wanting to give.

Joy is there.

Peace is there.

Abundance is there.

What is most in me to give is Freedom. I want people to be free to do and be who and what they are made to be. This is my Why – Freedom.

But freedom can be counter-intuitive… like having more discipline and self created boundaries can create more personal freedom.

Life, for the most part, is very counter-intuitive.

The more you give, the more you get. A truly giving person wants for very little, yet they seem to always have what they need when they need it. A open faucet lets the water flow from a vast abundance. I feel it is like this when we give. We open ourselves to the vast unlimited abundance that is the creative force within and underlying everything. When we open and empty ourselves of our story and desires and let abundance flow by giving of ourselves unselfishly there is a power that is beyond words. Giving allows us to get, and the process repeats.

Giving is a sign of great trust in the Universe. It shows there is a deep belief that there is something deeper than the physical. When we give of ourselves; time, energy, attention, there can be felt the unlimited nature of that kind of love. It is saying “I know the Source of abundance; I can give freely.”

What gets in the way of giving?

Fear. Fear

Fear that there will not be more. Fear that giving will become a trap. Fear that when we give there will be an expectation (obligation) to give the next time.

Like I said above, Life can be very counter-intuitive at times. And in this case, fear is the right direction. Give without wanting anything from it. Give with no idea of personal benefit and the fear will fall away.

I have to admit I had some fear when I got back from this Convention. There were so many people doing huge things in the world, with these huge missions and huge incomes that I felt small. But they all talked about being where I am, and some were right there only a few short years ago. My fear was that I had nothing to give or ‘who was I’ to give in this way. And the specific way it showed up, several times, was in regards to writing.

So, my fear is that I won’t be a good writer. That what I say won’t be ‘good enough’. My fear is that I will start and not finish, that I won’t stick to it. This is what is in me to give, however. I am OK if it sucks. I am open to writing for writings sake with the intention that one person benefits (even if its me in someway, that will then help someone else).

So I said ‘Fuck the Fear’ and am running straight at my ‘Monster’. I signed up for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and will start writing my book tomorrow morning. I have no outline or plan at the moment. I don’t know if this piece will even be fiction or non-fiction but I am going to do it. My process will be to meditate for 10 minutes before I write, get the house quiet with some ambient music. I will have the program up the night before I want to write in so when I wake up it is ready to rock. I have a Gymboss timer (vibrates like a pager when your time is done) set for 50 minutes. I will hit this with 50 minutes EVERYDAY for November.

I have several ideas for a theme, I would love your take on what the focus could be? What you want and what you think would benefit the most people. Here are some ideas I have.

  • Novel about a global wide spiritual event (Sun goes dark for three days) and the human race evolves quickly while everything we have been used to crumbles before our eyes.
  • Guide to be a ‘Successful Stoner’ – guide for professionals to get the most from Cannabis while not affecting their area of contribution.
  • Freedom Blueprint – Preventing ‘Dead-Ends’ in life that sap choice in life and drive to be who you really are and prevent your Unique Contribution.
  • A deep dive into the unknown, write like Steven King and just venture into the ‘Void of the White Page’ and see what emerges from the depths.

That last one is the one that interests me the most. Diving off the high dive without being able to see the water! A leap of faith into the abyss of Nothingness. So exited and so fucking scared!

I am facing my fears today. Is there anything you are running from you need to turn around and face head on?

Is there something you know you need to do that you have been putting off?

Time to turn that ‘blinking red light’ in you mind off. Turn around and face it. When you do, it looses all power, and YOU get that Power Back!

There is nothing to fear, but fear itself, and in all reality Fear is the Way. If you feel fear and its not like a bear running you down or life and death, its more than likely psychological fear of growing into the next stage of life. Growing means leaving something behind, but if we see what no longer serves us through the eyes of gratitude is moves that energy into higher places. Thank the belief, item or idea and let it go. Thank it for the service it gave at the time and let it go.

You do not have to hold onto everything. You do not have to remember everything. What you are is always there.

Move into what scares you and let go of what leaves. Growth is natural and transitions are always a bit messy.

To Freedom!

Pretend It’s T.V.

There is a radical way to view our waking reality.

Pretend It’s T.V.

When we drop all Story from “who we are” there is the simple experience of Being Alive. I suggest that that feeling of Being Alive is really what you are and everything on top of that most basic state is just “Story”.

You are connected to everything in this Stream of Life once you drop the Story.

Let Go and Be Free.

Inner Silence as a Source of Streangth

Life happens. Sometimes its good, sometimes it sucks. Nothing is for certain and nothing lasts forever.

How do we find peace in life when it is always on the move? Where is solid ground within the chaos we can find ourselves in?

Silence. Silence Lao Tzu

Silence within, silence to the voice of judgment; not by fighting, but by relaxing into and beneath the mental noise and clutter.

Have you ever been in a conversation and a great idea pops to mind? Its hard to hear the other person; your great idea just rearing to come out as the other person talks on. This is how I have seen myself and others lead their lives at times, just waiting to get the end result we were after and not really caring about the other person. But what we don’t often see is what we miss when we ‘shut down’ briefly when we want to jump in, as they are ultimately looking for love from us with our attention.

Or have you ever been so mad or upset that you can feel the energy in your body want to burst fourth? That almost religious fervor boiling in your blood at some injustice. That energy is useful, our ideas in a conversation are useful; only on the extent we can give them up, however. And Silence is the Path.Black Hole

When we create a ‘Black Hole’ within ourselves of Silence while in daily life it creates a vacuum that can facilitate Freedom. Not necessarily physical freedom, more of a Harmony in the moment. Its almost like the ‘Spirit Eater’ guys of Harry Potter, only in reverse. When you empty yourself, and I mean as completely as you can, in the moment with someone or some issue there is an energy exchange that I don’t understand but have felt and seen. When we drop our own Story and allow the Story around us to dissolve in our own internal Silence, there is a spaciousness that forms around us like a breath of fresh air.

SoHappy Ball as often as you can, Drop the Story of who you are and what you are about and rest in Silence.

That center of Silence within you gives a Strength that is hard to fathom. To find that center, Meditation helps tremendously. Three periods a day of 10 minutes is a great place to start if you have some meditation background. Just remember “Its OK if it Sucks”, if you are ‘horrible’ at meditation that is fine. If ten minutes is too much, start with 1 minute three time a day, go to 2 after a few weeks, exe. Make it easy on yourself to start and keep it going. Just keep releasing and resting in Silence.

This isn’t easy, but it works.

Let Go into Silence and be Free.

Peace in a Crazy World

The world feels odd right now. Its like everything has shifted slightly.

Natural Disasters, World ChaosPolitical Chaos, Nuclear War Drums beating, all of it seems to have people shaken up.

It feels difficult to find consistency in this shifting landscape.

So, Let Go.

Free-fall into the Nothingness within this Moment.

Every moment is simple. It is our thinking that makes it complex.Water Bubble

Each moment is like a flipping of pages. Each its own eternity. Each never to reappear the same way again.

Each moment is a snowflake. Fleeting and unreal except for a brief image. The only thing gluing them together is the Story we have about it.

The only thing that is Real is the blank background behind the Story. The blank white paper under the  writing is always the same, and its the same blank white page for all of us. We all tap into the same feeling of being alive as everyone else. Beneath the superficial differences in appearances, we are all the same.

If we are all thFlipping of Pagese same, it makes it hard to judge another. It makes it hard to judge our-self as well.

What you are will never change and the “Story” will never stay the same.

Give Up the Story.

Rest in the Nothingness behind every Moment and be Free.

Question Everything!

Success and Cannabis?

Start Within.

The concept came out of my frustrations with the Occupy Movement several years ago. I saw how many people pointed to others for their problems without seeing how they themselves may be apart of that same problem. That experience with organizing a group and protesting gave me a great insight into how people function. Many, I feel, are afraid or shamed to look at themselves. To clearly see both the good and bad of the situation and life they find themselves in. To look with awareness at your life alone, can create change just in itself. What gets measured, gets managed; and what gets managed, improves.

Cannabis has been a tool to ‘measure’ my life; a magnifying glass, when used correctly, that can show areas that need improvement or attention. Cannabis has also helped with pain and meditation among other things. But for today, I want to focus on Success.

What is success? I believe it is ‘continuous movement in the direction of your (individual) Dreams’. Success is the joy of the journey YOU set for yourself. But how do you know if its YOUR journey or one someone else ‘gifted’ to you (read: put on you).

Break Free and Be You! I hope this video helps get you on your way.

Define what Success means to you and move in the direction of your Dreams.
